What the Deputy Commissioner Does
In Jammu & Kashmir the Deputy Commissioner heads the district administration and holds three offices at once. As District Magistrate the officer is responsible for law and order, disaster management as Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, arms and explosives licensing, and magisterial functions. As Collector the officer heads the revenue administration: land records, mutations, land acquisition and compensation. As District Development Commissioner the officer coordinates the development departments, chairs the District Level Implementation Committees for schemes, and oversees the district capital expenditure plan.
The Deputy Commissioner is also the District Election Officer for parliamentary, assembly and panchayat elections and chairs the district committees on narcotics coordination (NCORD), road safety, health and education. In Anantnag the incumbent is concurrently Principal Census Officer, Census-2027, Yatra Officer, Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 (Pahalgam axis), Chairman, District Task Force for HPV Vaccination and District Election Officer, Panchayat Electoral Roll Revision 2026.
